Welcome Address
Director of The Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga
Assalamu’alaikum Wr Wb,
Dear all, the guest speakers and participants, Good morning.
Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Director of the Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga, I am very pleased to welcome you all, both offline and online, to Surabaya, Indonesia, and to attend the 2024 International Conference of UNAIR Postgraduate School (ICPS 2024), which will be held on September 11th, 2024, in collaboration between the Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga and Research Synergy Foundation.
This conference or seminar focuses on a nation's efforts to respond to global geopolitical dynamics by prioritizing transformation capabilities in order to maintain momentum in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. One form of this is economic transformation by maintaining growth twice as much as it is now so that at least the threshold as a developed country can be met. This must be the nation's collective ambition, even though the facts show that Indonesia's economic growth in the last 10 years has been +5% (except 2020-2021). In light of the fact that the average global economic growth rate has decreased to 2.4% from the previous year, this accomplishment is a source of gratitude. This year, the World Bank projects developing countries to grow by 3.9%, high-income countries to grow by 1.2%, and low-income countries to grow by 5.5%. Global geopolitics was the primary risk factor that contributed to the decreased growth of these three groups of countries compared to the previous year.
Global geopolitics has prolonged the economic slowdown since the Covid-19 pandemic and has not recovered since 2008. The World Bank noted that global economic growth in the last five years is the worst in 30 years. Therefore, a nation's ability to transform in the face of global geopolitical risks to achieve the SDGs targets can be a game changer that must be utilized effectively to face an increasingly complex and rapidly changing risk landscape. The transformative capability aspect can be a collective ambition of the nation because it will initiate individuals, communities, and social systems to be able to survive, adapt, and grow in the face of pressure and shocks, able to face risks and turn them into opportunities; and transform with conditions to be more adaptive.
This is in line with the vision of the Postgraduate School of Airlangga University (UNAIR), which is to become a world-class institution by developing transformative leaders who improve the world. Universities and entities within them will be required to always be responsive and continue to be responsive because they play a role in becoming the main spearhead in achieving each indicator of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through the nation's collective efforts in developing its transformative capacity. UNAIR Postgraduate School responded to this challenge by trying to hold an International seminar/conference with the theme "Transformation towards The 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda: Multidisciplinary Approaches".
Finally, we would like to welcome the conference delegates at the Postgraduate School, School of Leadership, Universitas Airlangga; and the participants can enjoy the diversity of cultures and culinary specialties in the city of Surabaya. We hope that the delegates can feel the academic atmosphere and discuss with each other, and also collaborate in order to formulate the ideal form of transformation capacity for Indonesia in the future.
Wassalamu’alaikum wr wb.

Welcome Remarks
From Vice Director for Research, Community Service, Internationalization, and Digitalization
The Postgraduate School, Universitas Airlangga
Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb.,
Dear guest speakers and participants,
Good morning to you all.
Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Vice Director for Research, Community Service, Internationalization, and Digitalization, I am very pleased to welcome you all, both onsite and virtual, to Surabaya, Indonesia, to the 2024 International Conference of UNAIR Postgraduate School (ICPS 2024), which will be held on September 11th, 2024, in collaboration between The Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga and Research Synergy Foundation.
This conference or meeting focuses on the capacity of a nation to realize the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda by taking transformative steps to guide every development activity. We all know that development activities will always be in contact with environmental aspects, in addition to the increasingly massive use of energy as a booster for development, which continues to increase and has the potential to have a negative impact on environmental sustainability. Since environmental impacts are frequently overlooked in favour of the monetary and societal costs that must be borne and frequently become a burden on society, one of the government's efforts in every nation to maintain environmental sustainability is to introduce the concept of sustainable development as a new understanding of the importance of environmental impacts.
Internalization of environmental impacts as a result of development activities needs to be a primary concern in every development activity, which is manifested in the form of monetary value and must be calculated from every social and economic action on the environment. This means that human activities, both in economic and social forms, must avoid/prevent or calculate their impact on environmental conditions as much as possible so that the environment can continue to carry out its ecological function and support life for the current generation and future generations. It is necessary to broaden this effort to include population, education, health, and settlements. It is an endeavour that has a noble goal to maintain the sustainability of the earth, which will later determine the continuation of the lives of future generations.
In response to this, UNAIR Postgraduate School needs to play a role by prioritizing Transformative Leadership to present environmentally sustainable policies in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. For this reason, UNAIR Postgraduate School held an International Seminar/Conference with the theme “Transformation towards The 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda: Multidisciplinary Approaches”.
We hope every conference participant will benefit from insightful conversations in a scholarly setting, establish new relationships and collaborations, and take in Surabaya's environment and culture.
Wassalamu’alaikum wr wb.
